How to Choose a Perfume as a Gift: A Practical Guide for When You're Not Sure
A perfume is a thoughtful gift because it is personal. That is also what makes it risky: a scent you love may simply not suit the person you are buying for. The good news is that you do not need to guess. A few observations and a little structure will take you most of the way.

1. Look for clues first
What do they wear today? Notice the bottle on their dresser, the scent they leave in a room, even the candles, soaps or flowers they choose. If you can, ask a close friend or family member. Their current favourite is the single best hint you will get.
2. Stay within the family they already like
Most perfumes fall into broad families. If you know which one they lean towards, choose something new within it rather than jumping to a completely different style.
- Fresh: citrus, green and aquatic notes. Light and clean.
- Floral: rose, jasmine, orange blossom. Soft to rich.
- Woody: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver. Calm and grounded.
- Amber and spice: warm resins, vanilla, spices. Deep and enveloping.
- Musky: soft, skin-like and comforting.
3. Match their personality and routine
Think about how they live. Someone always on the move may enjoy a bright citrus they can wear to work. Someone who loves quiet evenings at home may prefer something warm and soft. Ask yourself how you want the scent to make them feel: calm, confident, or simply clean and put together.
4. Consider the season and the setting
In Egypt's heat, a lighter fragrance is often easier to wear by day, while deeper, warmer scents come into their own in the evening and in winter. If the gift is for daily office wear, avoid anything very heavy. Our guide to Parfum, EDP, EDT and EDC explains how concentration affects strength.
5. When in doubt, choose a safe direction
If you have no clues at all, soft musks, gentle amber and subtle woods are widely liked and rarely offend. Very sweet gourmand scents, heavy oud or strongly animalic perfumes are wonderful for people who love them, but they are polarising, so keep them for when you know the person's taste.
6. A smaller size is a smart gift
A travel size, a mini or a discovery set lets the person explore without committing to a full bottle. You can always add a note promising the full size of whichever one they love most.
7. Test it properly before you buy
Don't judge a gift on the first spray. Try it on skin and wait at least half an hour so you meet the heart and base notes, not just the opening. Our article on top, heart and base notes explains why.
A few practical details
- Check the exchange policy. Many stores only exchange unopened items, so ask before you buy and keep the receipt.
- Keep the box sealed. It protects the perfume and keeps the exchange option open.
- Add a handwritten note. A line about why you chose this scent for them often means as much as the bottle.
The best perfume gift is not the one you love most. It is the one that fits the person you are giving it to.
