Top, Heart and Base Notes: How a Perfume Unfolds on Your Skin

October 13, 2026 · 1 min read

Many people buy a perfume in the first minute after spraying it, then find it smells quite different an hour later. That is not a fault in the perfume. It is how most fragrances are built: as a sequence of notes that reveal themselves in stages, often described as a pyramid.

Top notes: the first impression

These are the lightest, most volatile materials, the ones you smell first. Citrus such as bergamot and lemon, and some fresh herbs and light spices, are typical. They are bright and inviting, but they fade fastest, usually within the first stretch of wear.

Heart notes: the character

As the top notes fade, the heart emerges. This is the core of the fragrance and lasts considerably longer. Florals such as rose and jasmine, and warm spices, often sit here.

Base notes: what stays

The base is made of the heaviest materials, which evaporate slowly and anchor the whole composition. Woods, musks, amber, vanilla and oud are common base notes. This is what remains on your skin and clothes hours later, and what people remember.

The pyramid is a simplification

Not every perfume follows the pyramid neatly. Some modern fragrances are described as linear: they smell much the same from start to finish. The pyramid is a useful guide, not a rule.

How to test a fragrance properly

  • Test on skin, not only on paper. A blotter shows you the scent, but your skin shows how it behaves on you.
  • Wait before deciding. Give it at least 30 minutes, ideally a few hours, so you meet the heart and the base.
  • Don't test too many at once. After three or four, your nose tires and everything starts to blur.
  • Be wary of the coffee-bean trick. Evidence that coffee beans "reset" your nose is weak; stepping outside for fresh air, or smelling a clean patch of your own skin, works at least as well.
Judge a perfume by how it smells after an hour, not in the first ten seconds. That is the version you will live with.
